چکیده
BAHLER, ALAN S. Series elastic component of mammalian skeletal muscle. Am. J. Physiol. 213(6): 1560-1564. 1967.-A method of modifying the Wilkie quick-release technique of determining the compliance of the series elastic component of mammalian muscle is described. This modification eliminates the effect of muscle and lever system mass by adding an additional factor related to the shortening of the contractile component. The compliance of the series elastic component of the rat gracilis anticus muscle varies from 1.1 X lo+ cm/dyne at maximum isometric tetanic tension to 17.6 X lOA cm/dyne at zero tension. The extension of this component was 0.07 rest length at maximum isometric tetanic tension. The damping of the series elastic component was calculated from an energy balance technique to be typically 300 dyne/cm per sec. The results of this study are compared with those obtained from other striated muscles.

متن کاملLong-bone allometry of terrestrial mammals and the geometric-shape and elastic-force constraints of bone evolution.
Replace this text with your own abstract. A natural similarity in body dimensions of terrestrial animals noticed by ancient philosophers remains the main key to the problem of mammalian skeletal evolution with body mass explored in theoretical and experimental biology and tested by comparative zoologists. We discuss the long-standing problem of mammalian bone allometry commonly studied in terms...
متن کاملSkeletal muscle stiffness in static and dynamic contractions.
Series elastic stiffness of rat gastrocnemius medialis muscle was determined by means of sinusoidal movements (180 Hz, 0.25% of muscle length) for various contraction conditions. The effects of muscle length, activation level, velocity, prestretch, and temperature on the force-stiffness relationship were investigated. All force-stiffness curves were transformed to a linear force-alpha curve (Et...
متن کاملSeries of exon-skipping events in the elastic spring region of titin as the structural basis for myofibrillar elastic diversity.
Titins are megadalton-sized filamentous polypeptides of vertebrate striated muscle. The I-band region of titin underlies the myofibrillar passive tension response to stretch. Here, we show how titins with highly diverse I-band structures and elastic properties are expressed from a single gene. The differentially expressed tandem-Ig, PEVK, and N2B spring elements of titin are coded by 158 exons,...
متن کاملMyocardial Mechanics: Tension-velocity-length Relationships of Heart Muscle.
• The purpose of this paper is to present recent findings that define in greater detail the mechanical behavior of the myocardium. Investigation of the mechanical events associated with myocardial contraction involves at least three parts: 1) study of the contractile elements of the muscle itself, 2) study of the elastic and hydraulic machinery coupling the forces of the contractile elements to...
